What to Wear for Lifestyle Sessions

Choosing outfits doesn't't have to feel overwhelming. The goal isn't perfection... it's your comfort, connection, and clothing that lets your family simply be together.

The best photos happen when you feel like yourself.

Start with Soft, Natural Colors

I always recommend earthy, timeless tones that photograph beautifully every season. Think creams, warm browns, muted greens, dusty blues, and soft neutrals.

These colors keep the focus on emotion and connection instead of pulling attention toward clothing. They also help your gallery feel cohesive and timeless for years to come.

Coordinate Instead of Matching

Instead of everyone wearing the same color, choose two or three tones that work well together.

A simple way to plan outfits is to start with one person, usually Mom, and build around that look. Pull complementary colors and mix soft textures like linen, cotton, or knits. This creates depth and keeps everything feeling natural rather than overly styled.

Patterns are absolutely welcome and can add beautifully personality to your photos. The key is balance. If one person is wearing a pattern, try pairing it with solids or softer textures the rest of the family so nothing competes for attention. Coordinating tones with a statement pattern usually photographs beautifully.

Movement Photographs Beautifully

Flowy dresses, relaxed fits, and soft fabrics add movement and emotion to your images. Little details like twirling dresses or clothing that moves in the breeze help your photos feel alive.

For little ones, comfort is everything! Simple outfits, bare feet when possible, and clothes they can play and move in will always photograph better than something stiff or uncomfortable.

Keep Patterns Simple

Patterns can be beautiful when paired right, but avoid loud logos, bright neon colors, or very busy prints that compete with each other. Timeless and simple choices allow the focus to stay on your family and the moments you share together.

A Little Extra Help if You Need It

If choosing outfits feels overwhelming, I am always happy to help guide you. You can send photos of options you are considering and we can plan something that feels natural and true to your family.

I also offer a small client closet with carefully chosen pieces that photograph beautifully and fit the soft, nostalgic feel of my sessions. These pieces are available to help make planning easier and to take some pressure off of finding the perfect outfit.

The Most Important Thing

Your session is not about perfect clothing. It is about documenting this season of life exactly as it is. The laughter, the closeness, the chaos, and the love are what matter most.

If you are ready to plan your session, I would love to photograph your story.
